West Seattle Reservoir Lid Brainstorming Session
August 27, 2007

If you're not familiar with Westcrest Park & reservoir, which is presently uncovered, take a look.

The "Brainstorming Session" for the reservoir lid was intended as a creative exercise to collect all ideas without limitation.

We were then to distill the ideas down to a more practical list, but as these things often go, the brainstorming was just too much fun, and the distillation will have to occur at a later date.

A summary of the ideas brought forth:

VALUES WE'D LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED:

  • Sustainability - Natural habitat vs. paved.
  • Pedestrian accessibility - Neighborhood pedestrian connections
  • Local communities emphasized - not a "destination"
  • Minimize automobile traffic
  • Multiple use - variety of interests involved in all features
  • Appreciation for art - designed in or permanently installed
  • Connectivity with existing trails
  • Inviting access points

FACILITIES WE'D LIKE TO SEE THERE:

  • P-Patch: garden plots
  • Natural area
  • Radio-controlled model car track
  • "View" trails
  • Samoan Cricket field (a sport, not an exotic insect)
  • Skateboard park
  • Facilities for basketball, baseball, soccer
  • Bike racks
  • Open space for exercise - stretching, calisthenics, yoga, tai chi, etc.
  • Area for temporary display of local artists' work
  • Place for festivals
  • Stage for performances
  • Airplane viewing spot - King Co. Airport, Sea-Tac flightlines, east/west flightline
  • Educational piece about the water supply system
  • Storm water capture - slow release

TYPES OF EVENTS FACILITIES SHOULD ENCOURAGE:

  • "Programmed" activities - organization-sponsored, such as an
    exercise class
  • Festivals
  • Movies
  • Music
  • Theatrical events
  • Informal meeting/socializing for moms & kids, neighbors, etc.
