COMMUNITY REPORTS

Grant / Partnership with White Center Community Development Assn. update. The grant money looks to be approved at this time. The only changes anticipated were lighting for selected business was eliminated. Approved are the 4 waste containers which will be serviced by the city, most of the money that we asked for to hold a "Summit" meeting in the spring. The Summit meeting is to be held with our neighboring community groups to ask the community what do we need and what can we do with each other to make our communities better. Final approval should be sometime in the next week. We should be hearing from Karen Beget of Wa St Insurance Council.

Elections are coming up. It will be very important to attend the October meeting if you want to nominate someone for an officer position with HPAC. Elections will be held at the November meeting.

We approved a 3-year purchase of our own domain, highlandpk.net, which you are reading now! The domain name costs $9.99 per year and that includes a free website including an advertisement for the GoDaddy web hosting site. A site without a banner would cost $38 per year. Dina Johnson is the webdesigner.

A resident reported that the trees planted in the parking strip on 8th and Cambridge is a concern, due to the root structure penetrating possible sewer drains and damaging sidewalks. She has called the city and reported the situation. The city came out to look at the situation and agreed that they could be a problem now and in the future. Ron Angeles said he would try and see who came out originally from the engineering dept. Concern was voiced about the Mayor's plan to plan thousands of more trees in the upcoming year.

Art installation at West Crest Park will be near the viewpoint that looks over the reservoir. The artists name is Malenko and he has done other work in West Seattle. The plans are still waiting final permit approval. It will be called the "sky bridge."

A discussion was held RE the store on 9th and Henderson. It is rumored that the trash is blown from the property to the street. The store owner is a good one. He doesn't allow the activity to go on at his store like the store on 16th and Henderson. We would like to approach him to see if he might be interested in attending our meetings and to see if we might be able to keep the trashy appearance of his store looking a little better. A member said she would mention our concern to the owner. When I drove by on Wednesday, it appeared that all the trash had been picked up. Thanks! I think we all patronized his store from time to time and understand that he battles with criminal activity more often than he should. Be sure to stop in and say thank you and spend some money while your there.

COMMUITY POLICE REPORT- Adonis Topacio adonis.topacio@seattle.gov
  • The most recent crime wave has to do with thieves stealing copper/ metal products from building sites or where ever they can find it. It is then taken to a scrap metal recycle company who will pay cash for the metal. The money is spent to purchase drugs.
  • Thefts are on the rise a little in the area.
  • There is a trend of a lot of stolen cars being recovered in this area. They are not necessarily stolen from here; they are just being dumped here. If you see a car sitting on the street that doesn't belong, call it in or email Adonis.
  • The store on 16th and Henderson has been very quite. It is closed temporarily because of an electrical fire. Rumor has it that it has been sold although it hasn't been confirmed. Work is being done to get the building back into shape and operational again.
  • 9011 apartment complex has bee recently remodeled and is rumored to be sold although this hasn't been confirmed either. The new owner is also rumored to be a firefighter. Officer Adonis is keeping a watchful eye on the complex.
  • 9201 26th SW is known as high traffic for narcotics. A tip was called in and officers were able to serve a search warrant. An arrest was made and $6000 in cash as well as 170 grams of flake cocaine and other narcotics were recovered.
  • A suspected pedophile has been making contact with young girls in the vicinity of 9th and Cloverdale. Officers have contacted the suspect but made no arrest. The suspect was only "interacting" with the girls and did nothing to warrant arrest. Parents need to inform their children to be safe and walk with other people.

Last year we sat next to Highland Park Improvement Club, which was mutually beneficial.
  4. October 24th- the Youngtown Cultural Center at 6pm, The Dept of Neighborhoods will be rolling out their new plan for emergency preparedness. Anyone can attend and it would be a good meeting to go to for anyone who is thinking about setting up a group in their neighborhood for emergency preparedness. We all know that in the event of an emergency, we are all expected to be able to take care of ourselves for at least 3 days. Emergency services will most likely be unavailable to us during crisis because they will be needed to service the bigger problems that will arise in an emergency.
Ken writes: "On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone who reads and responds. It's nice to know the information is getting out to people."
"By they way, if you know someone who's thinking about Real Estate and could use my services, please give me a call with their name and number. I'll be happy to follow up with them."
