COMMUNITY REPORTS

  • Jacqui Deelstra of Big Brothers / Big Sisters described their mentoring program at Highland Park Elementary School. They need adult volunteers to mentor students at the school. Interested adults are encouraged to contact Jacqui: jacqui.deelstra@bbbs.org or 206-763-9060, ext. 241.
The site coordinator at Highland Park Elementary School is Pam Rago.
Volunteers must be able to meet with a student one hour per week during the school day on the school grounds.
  • Pete Spalding reported on the City of Seattle's Neighborhood Street Fund and Cumulative Reserve Fund. These funds result from levies passed by voters, and will provide $400,000 per year for the Delridge area (which includes Highland Park) for street and public infrastructure improvements. Ideas for improvements should be sent to the Delridge District Council: delridgedistrictcouncil@comcast.net, or to Ron Angles at ron.angles@seattle.gov.
  • The Delridge District Council will be sending out a COMMUNITY CALENDAR. Ask to be included in this at delridgedistrictcouncil@comcast.net .
  • The Gathering of Neighbors, held in November for the past three years, has been sponsored by Megawatt. That organization has no staff now, so to repeat the Gathering of Neighbors event this year will require other organizations and individuals in the community to step up and make it happen.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • Saturday, March 31, 2007 - The HIGHLAND PARK SUMMIT will be held at the Highland Park Improvement Club from noon to 3:00 PM. This will be a fun event where individuals and community groups in and around Highland Park can share their visions of how our neighborhood can grow and thrive. Food and entertainment will be included, and children are welcome.
  • Saturday, April 14, 2007 - The Delridge Stewardship Gathering will be from 9 AM to noon at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. A panel discussion by people active in the Delridge Community will examine how to organize events, and how to work with city departments. Volunteers are needed for the event.
  • Saturday, July 14, 2007 - The Clean and Green neighborhood clean up day will be in the Delridge area. City departments will work with volunteers from the Delridge area to clean up areas spots that need attention. No doubt there will be some sort of associated party afterward.

COMMUNITY POLICE REPORT - Adonis Topacio adonis.topacio@seattle.gov

  • The 16th Avenue Grocery appears to be about to reopen for business. Their liquor license may still be valid because the closure was the result of a fire. There is an enthusiastic new WSLCB Inspector for West Seattle.
  • At Westcrest Park there has been an increase in problems reported around the south end of the park.
  • Burgularies, break-ins and car prowls have increased in the neighborhood lately.
Graffitti at Highland Park Elementary School has occurred lately.
  • Officer Kevin McDaniel is now assigned to our Community Police Team, and can be reached at kevin.mcdaniel@seattle.gov or at 206-233-1459.
